Received the February/March issue of ArtVoices – a relaunch of an earlier publication – and am happy with how the two reviews which i wrote for this printed publication turned out (will post here later after I figure out where) and I hope to drop a copy of one of them off at Andrea Schwartz Gallery tomorrow for her artist.

Tomorrow a return to the studio to pick up where i left off on a set of 6 or 7 works which are in muted neutrals and tones. And also on the agenda are to drop off a couple of newly framed works to Sandra Lee Gallery. These two small works can be seen here (click here) . They now have a hardwood maple frames natural with black trim along the front – please go by and check them out. The gallery is at 251 Post suite 310 sf ca 94108.

2012 College Art Association ArtExchange exhibition

I will be exhibiting a small group of works at the College Art Assciation conference ArtExchange in February, of which these works are a part. Borrowing from Kosuth in presentation – these works contain an acrylic painting on paper, a cmyk inkjet print on photo luster paper, and a digital image displayed on a laptop. The series is titled Reproduction Series: Hierarchical Ladder with these four individual works subtitled “Entities”, “Growth”, “Tally” and “Opening”. The above image shows the view with all three aspects – the ones imaged below lack the digital image on a laptop for the purpose of this blog. This work questions (and brings to light) the way we see, understand and experience things in a digital world – each of these aspects (the physical painting, the cmyk print, the digital image) are viable so how do we differentiate?

This morning Excel , this afternoon writing and discovered cool thing in Word (yes Microsoft) – the vertically-stretchy help box and in doing so also discovered their included proofing tools. Never knew they were there – perhaps just in this newer version but could be a real timesaver. This is all I am saying for now and for today – power in limits.

Update and information on Sandra Lee Gallery Group Exhibition

Last evening visited the few openings in SF – a number of them are in Miami. Over and over it hits me how artists work so intensely to give visual expression to their ideas and concerns. I’ll write about a few of these for ArtVoices a relaunch http://www.artvoicesmagazine.com/ which will begin to be published in February 2012.

Work in the studio consists of 10 small works on unstretched canvas and 6 larger works in neutrals (at least so far). Two new paintings are at Sandra Lee Gallery 251 Post, SF 94108 for a group exhibition – a nice opening and potluck meal is scheduled for December 15, 2011 in the early evening – more coming later on this but please feel invited.

On this fine day with subtle rain I sit down to update website. The page doesn’t fit correctly in the window and the computer runs too slow. So I have a moment of troubleshooting. The computer had crashed last Friday and these great guys not just got it up and running but also saved all of my data with the suggestion of an additional backup drive which I then ordered online and it arrived two days ago, I installed but the scanning software which came with it using 50% of my cpu along with a few other elements from the same using more. So I uninstalled the software (the backup drive will work without), started up Dreamweaver (software I use for website building) and realized the screen resolution had changed to its original settings (which is why the web page did not fit on the screen). Back to the drawing board – I now have everything perfected. All this to say I am updating my website today!

it felt like just yesterday…

just felt like yesterday when i posted the shot of my studio but it is almost one month later. some photos to put up but not today. Invited to submit a review to ArtVoices (NY,LA, New Orleans) and focusing on that. also some writing for artbusiness.com. Mainly creating a project space in the studio – almost 400 sq feet with 14 ft ceilings. Concrete floor. Sheetrocked walls. No furniture. Empty space. To do this no simple feat but requiring me to move a number of things (like paintings and a painting rack) and dismantle a few others. But it is nearly complete. Also cleaned up the painting area of the studio which also required moving a number of things – feeling now like i can get back to work. The small pieces on canvas are waiting for me, tacked to the wall, 3 across, 3 down (9) and one to the side making 10 – plus wish to begin what i imagine will be my last 100! sets – one on paper and one on canvas. While thinking of that realized the twitter feed work was never photographed. Which means reinstalling – also a major feat. But luckily for me the project space has room now. The project space I hope will house workshops, shared studio time, exhibitions and short-term rental agreements. Possibly more – want to continue the ‘Present identity’ series. One of my facebook friends commented that it was perhaps creating space in a mental way as well – feels like it. We’ll see.

Sandra Lee of Sandra lee Gallery in SF, upon visiting the studio a month ago, selected one of the works from my 100! series – The Silver Lining. Needless to say, I am jazzed. It contains 100 small paintings which can be rearranged producing a physical form relating the concept of infinity (note title). At the same time incorporating upon a silver grid the spring flowers which bloom only once a year selected from a recent visit to Joshua Tree National Monument. So all 100 10″ x 10″ sections will be viewable at her gallery – here is a sampling of a few of the small sections:

Apple Store, SF October 6, 2011 Steve Jobs: Shadow Cast

On my way to visit a few galleries Thursday evening walked by the Apple Store in SF and wished to share some photos. Hundreds of people paying their respects surround the sidewalk shrine that is now extending upwards covering the glass walls of the Apple Store with personal notes.

The passing of Steve Jobs is felt like a weight here – Silicon Valley has lost one of its own. The public persona of Steve Jobs was so personable, like he was making each object of design specifically for each one of us. And each season with a new design – with his larger than life presentations. I’ve personally never quite experienced anything like this – a community feeling and expression of this sense of loss with informal memorials of flowers, notes, offerings of fruit (apples) and more. Truley the passing of someone great and I, like the others say as one “We’ll miss you, Steve, your life is an inspiration.”

No Open Studios this year, Fall 2011

Cold rainy day with moments of sunshine – many of us around these parts are wondering if it is truly the culmination of summer. And with that, full swing into the fall season. In my studio, the just recently photographed 100! work sits stacked on the floor as I begin to imagine the next.

This year not doing the open studio event in San Francisco. But please be invited to view my two paintings which will be at Sandra Lee Gallery in December from The Ring series. The dates are not yet in writing – will post more information as I have it. The image pictured below will be in this show. It is a medium size work housing depth and color in a rampage of markmaking.

Am in the process of developing some grant applications – one for travel and the others for my 100! project. see http://kathrynarnold.com/nyfa.html . I have incorporated a perfomance aspect to this work as well – basing it upon my and others’ twitter feeds.
